The brief
A small garden and livestock unit outside the village with nobody there at night and no wired internet. The owner wanted to watch the gate, the pen and the feed store from home, and to be alerted on his phone to movement at night. Power cuts are also common in the area.
How it was done
- 01 Operator signal surveyed on site and the SIM and external antenna position chosen before any equipment was bought
- 02 Cameras positioned on the routes in, with infrared range matched to the real distance to each gate
- 03 Outdoor network cable in conduit, with sealed junction boxes and surge protection on the long runs
- 04 Cameras powered from a PoE switch, with recorder, switch and router all on a UPS
- 05 Full quality recording to disk, and a low bitrate stream for remote viewing to keep data use down
- 06 Motion zones set on the entrances, with tree branches masked out to cut false alerts
- 07 Default passwords changed, and the owner shown live viewing and playback
The outcome
The owner watches the gate, pen and store from home and gets a phone alert for night movement at the entrances. Recording and remote viewing have carried on through power cuts. Monthly data use has stayed within an ordinary SIM package.
