The brief
A villa under renovation that the family used only in summer and on some weekends. The previous winter, after a long power cut, damp and mould had set in indoors without anyone knowing. The owner wanted to bring the heating on before arriving, hear about power cuts, and have the garden lighting and irrigation run themselves.
How it was done
- 01 A wired system with relays in the board, since the walls were open for renovation and new wiring was possible
- 02 A local controller in the board that runs every scene without internet
- 03 The boiler controlled through its thermostat input, without touching its internal circuitry
- 04 Indoor temperature and humidity sensor with a low temperature alert, and power loss and restore notifications to the phone
- 05 SIM router with battery backup, and SMS as a second path if mobile data is down
- 06 Garden path lighting on a photocell and timer, and the irrigation pump on a schedule with dry run protection
- 07 Wall switches kept working in parallel, and a plain guide handed to the family
The outcome
The family turn the heating on before they set off, and the indoor temperature has stayed above the set floor through winter. Two power cuts the following winter were reported to the phone as they happened. Garden lighting and irrigation run without anyone touching them.
